The chart on the right depicts the different sizes of airborne contaminants measured in microns. Larger particles are shown on the left side of the chart, and smaller particles are on the right. The naked eye can see particles like plant spores and pollen that are as small as 5 microns in width. We can observe particles of certain types of bacteria and fungi as small as 0.1 microns with a typical microscope. An electron microscope can be used to view particles like viruses and certain types of gas that are as small as .001 microns large.
